| www.usacharvels.com: Your resource for vintage San Dimas Charvel guitars! | |||
This Charvel has a lot of very interesting features and is a great example to illustrate Charvel's motto; if you can dream it they could build it. This Charvel Star has serial number 3310 and is a great rocker with a single hum, locking tremolo and a kick ass graphic! This is yet another Charvel guitar with an animal graphic. The work order refers to the pattern as a Leopard, although it reminds me of a cow!! The graphic is found on the face and sides of the body in addition to the headstock face. A matching "graphic" painted headstock is very uncommon, even necks with headstocks painted in a solid color are relatively uncommon. Typically you find the headstocks to be black on the Jackson (pointy) style and natural wood finish for Strat headstock necks. In my opinion the added painted headstocks really adds a nice touch. Even more unusual (and very rare) is the block neck inlays. The block inlays and ebony fretboard found on this guitar remind me of a Gibson Les Paul Custom and like a Les Paul Custom the inlays start at the first fret. On the work order this detail is captured with the "Block Inlay. 1st Fret, sending picture" comment. While other neck inlay shapes are known (example Lightning Bolt, Diamonds, Crescent Moons or having no inlays), by far the vast majority of Charvel necks sported simple dot inlays. Like the specifics for the neck inlays the customer also supplied Charvel with the artwork/details for the graphic. Written on the order form next to the graphic and paint field is "see picture". I have seen this comment written on the order forms of several Charvels including #4875 for which I also have a copy of the artwork that was originally sent to Charvel by the customer. Electronics include a non original EMG pickup and while I am not a big fan of the sound of these pickups I do like the sound of this guitar so I left it in. The work order shows that the guitar was shipped with a Duncan PAF, Kahler tremolo, and had volume and tone controls. Written in the neck pocket in pencil are the work order (invoice) number 1384, the word "Grafik" and the initials "MJ". Written over this information in black marker are the initials "SVS" and date "3/84" Neck markings include the work order (invoice) number 1384 (remember unlike early Charvels that typically used consecutive work order (invoice) numbers for the body and neck, later serial numbered Charvels used the same work order (invoice) number) and "ODPH" which I suspect refers to the painted headstock. From my experience all the Jackson style (pointy) necks that have the black plastic capped headstocks painted (solid color or as in this case with a graphic) have this "ODPH" code written on them. The more commonly found necks having the standard black colored headstock (not painted) have "OBD" written on them. Barry's Custom Guitars in Lakeland, FL ordered this Charvel on 1-11-84. |
